Fellow Zephen Specht (2010-11) and teacher partner Duke Raley (Eastlake High School) were featured in an article about the American Chemical Society (ACS) Science Coaches program. Zephen, along with fellows Emily Satkiewicz, Kristina Mitchell, and Carmen Velez, received funding for an after-school club that introduces scientists into the classroom.

Socrates Fellows at the Science Festival

This year's San Diego Science Festival had two booths with Socrates Fellows! The booth planned and run by fellows was themed San Diego's Next Top Science Model. Fellows also helped with the Can You Conquer Cancer? booth put on by Celgene and run by San Diego High, with help from the Eastlake science club students.

Changing the Equation: San Diego Science Festival Receives National Recognition for Advancing STEM Education

The San Diego Science Festival and Agilent Technologies, a major sponsor of the Festival, were recently recognized for their efforts to increase student interest and achievement in science education by President Obama’s nationwide “Change the Equation (CTEq)” initiative, which seeks to improve science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in the United States.

Bees, Biology and Chemistry: Bringing Graduate Level Research to High School Classrooms

UCSD Socrates Fellow Meg Eckles teamed up with Jeff Kepper, a 16-year veteran biology teacher at Helix Charter High and with Debbie Byrd, the school’s AP environmental science teacher to teach bee ecology. Eckles is one of nine other Socrates fellows, all doctoral students, enriching the high school science curriculum of various San Diego area schools with cutting edge science from UCSD. The fellowships are funded through a science education grant from the National Science Foundation.
