Engineer Day 2010

students build an oreo towerThis year's "Engineer Day" at Jacobs School of Engineering at UCSD was a great success! Students from Wilson and Manroe-Clark Middle Schools spent a half day on the UCSD campus exploring topics in engineering and bioengineering.  After a brief TV-show style introduction to "What is Engineering?", students explored the Jacobs School and Warren Mall area of UC San Diego, taking lab tours and participating in various hands-on activities.

In addition to an Oreo tower design competition, students extracted DNA from strawberries, make their own mini-lava lamps powered by chemical reactions, toured cartiladge and other bioengineering labs as well as plasma physics labs, researched stem cells, and extracted protein from bacteria.  This was is all in a day's work for the many engineering and bioengineering students that helped mentor the students and talk to them about college.

The morning culminated with lunch in the infamous "Bear Courtyard," where the scientists and students enjoyed sunshine and a grand finale: the classic Mentos & Coke explosion...err.. "experiment."
