Castle Park Middle School explored the concept of “change” through an interdisciplinary project. With Dr. Andrew Cooksy, a physical chemist, as their partner scientist, physical and chemical changes were the core ideas used to thread together lessons in science, history and math. In chemistry, students learned about polymers and phases of matter. In history, they studied the chemistry of soil and the how the soil depletion process has affected American’s farming industry. In math, students built small steam-powered boats (“putt putt boats) and demonstrated how mathematical calculations could be used to graph changes in speed and distance. For the culminating media product, students used Windows Movie Maker and GarageBand to film, edit and produce soundtracks for a collection of bilingual video clips about physical and chemical changes.
During the Summer Institute, teacher teams created a planning document for piloting and implementing their projects throughout the year. This document allowed the teachers to plan their collaboration, test their lesson plans, engage their partner scientist and to effectively integrate the use of technology into the classroom. In addition to this project plan, a few examples of their lesson plans (some interdisciplinary) are posted here:

One of the goals of the CyberBridge program was to expand the use of media and cyber-infrastructure (CI) in the classroom. Bilingual informational videos were produced by students that demonstrated what they learned about physical and chemical changes (aligned with 8th grade California Science Content Standards). The students showcased their videos and engaged the public with hands on chemistry during a public exhibition at the San Diego Science Festival EXPO day, an event that attracted over 30,000 people.
