Montgomery High School integrated their Public Relations, Media, Chemistry and Spanish classes and collaborated with Computer Programmer Dr. Kris Stewart from San Diego State University to explore social and environmental implications of technology. They chose Cybersafety and electronic waste (e-waste) as their areas of focus. They participated in a community based e-waste recycle day at their school and took a field trip to visit the San Diego State University Journalism and Media department. During the project students used a variety of technologies, including Adobe Photoshop, iMovie, Adobe Premier and Scratch to explore the topics. For their culminating media project, students created public service announcements about e-waste and cyberbullying.
During the Summer Institute, teacher teams created a planning document for piloting and implementing their projects throughout the year. This document allowed the teachers to plan their collaboration, test their lesson plans, engage their partner scientist and to effectively integrate the use of technology into the classroom. In addition to this project plan, a few examples of their lesson plans (some interdisciplinary) are posted here:

One of the goals of the CyberBridge program was to expand the use of media and cyber-infrastructure (CI) in the classroom. Montgomery High students created various types of media. They wrote and edited bilingual newspaper articles on e-waste and cybersafety and also created public service announcements on e –waste and cybersafety that were not only shown on their daily news video bulletin, but were also showcased during a public exhibition at the San Diego Science Festival EXPO day. The event attracted 30,000 people and the teachers and students engaged the public with various recycling games and cybersafety awareness tips.
